Hat:
The hat is knitted in 2 parts and open, as follows:
First cast on 8 st and 2 est for the border (cross-stitching) and knit garter stitch. After 84 r bind off the st. Now evenly take up 86 st from the long side (knotted edge) (= 84 st plus 2 est). Continue to knit as follows
1st r (= WSR.): 1 est, knit, 1 est
2nd r (= RSR.): 1 est, * k 6, k 1 through back of loop from the cross stitch, from * rep., 1 est (= 100 st)

Pull these remaining 9 st together with the working thread. Close the rear hat seam as flat as possible.
Finishing:
If desired, knit a latch for the loop and the hat and fasten with a button (see illustration): cast on 5 st and knit garter stitch with knotted edge. After 24 r bind off all st. Sew an end of the latch on the inside of the hat/loop. Sew the other end of the latch to the outside of the hat/loop, which should result in a slight accentuation. Sew the button onto the outer edge of the latch. Make a small pompon and sew on to the hat.
